Clinical Monitoring vs Sponsor Oversight: What's the Difference?

Clinical monitoring and sponsor oversight are neighbours. They are not the same job, and putting both labels on one visit report usually means one of them is missing.
Clinical monitoring is performed against the monitoring plan. Someone qualified goes to the site, or reviews agreed data remotely, checks what the protocol and the plan require, writes the report, and follows issues through. The output is a picture of that site at that moment.
Oversight sits one level up
Sponsor oversight asks whether the system of monitoring, data, vendors and sites is performing. It reads reports rather than only writing them. It looks at trends across sites, at late reports, at CAPA that never closes, and at CRO performance against the contract. It escalates when the pattern matters more than any single finding.
A sponsor can buy monitoring and still have no oversight. A sponsor can also hover over every visit and call that oversight, which is usually just delay. The distinction is in what sponsor oversight is: visibility, an owner, and action while there is still time.
