What International Sponsors Should Know Before Conducting Clinical Trials in Africa

24 October 2026

International and African clinical professionals reviewing a country folder together.

International sponsors often arrive with a protocol, a global CRO, and a country list. The missing piece is an operating picture of each market: who approves what, how long it takes, which sites can actually recruit, and who will notice if the local plan starts to drift.

Africa is not one clinical research environment. SADC member states, Côte d'Ivoire and Cameroon, to take markets where authority engagement has been part of the work, do not share a single ethics clock or a single import routine. Treating them as one work package is how start-up dates become fiction.

Settle three things before first patient

First, the regulatory and ethics path, including CTA dossier quality. That is regulatory and market support. Second, the site and monitoring model, built for distance and for the staff who will actually do the work. Third, sponsor oversight of whoever you have asked to deliver. A global vendor does not remove the sponsor's duty to see.

The wider frame is clinical trials in Africa, and the operational detail is in conducting clinical trials in Africa.
